"My name is Nikki Ruhl and I'm a registered Vet Tech in Templeton, Ca. I had a friend by the name of Dr. David Edsall, come to me and ask me to help him open a new vet hospital in our town. I told him I would not work for a vet hospital that did declawed. I find it to be inhumane and extremely unethical. Dr. Edsall looked at me and said .... "You know what ..... I don't ever need to do another declawed again in my career .... I hate doing them to begin with"! So we are the first and only vet hospital in SLO County, that I'm aware of, that will not do declawed! : ) And over the moon proud of this fact! Our hospital is called Las Tablas Animal Hospital. And we treat animals with compassion, care and ethical treatment!" - Nikki Ruhl, RVT Las Tablas Animal Hospital 959 Las Tablas Road STE A1 Templeton, CA 93465 805-369-2222 http://www.lastablasanimalhospital.com/

I am opposed to declawing cats. The procedure causes enormous pain, and most people don't understand what they are asking when they request their cat be declawed. I always insist they visit www.declawing.com first to be totally informed.
It is also important that people consider what might possibly happen in the future if they declaw their cat--one never knows what might happen. A friend's daughter was traveling down I-10 with her cat when her car turned over. The cat--declawed on all four paws--was lost in the woods of Florida. Luckily there was a happy ending since he was found six weeks later, though he was severely emaciated. I know of another person who had a declawed cat that was turned out a night, stating the cat really liked to go out. This cat ended up being mauled by dogs.
I will never declaw a cat unless there is a medical reason necessitating the declaw.

I am the owner/veterinarian at Curbside Care Mobile Veterinary Clinic. When I opened my own practice in 2010, I made the decision to NOT offer declaw surgery as a service. When a client asks about declawing a cat, I explain the surgery to them, tell them why I think it is unnecessary and inhumane, and encourage them to consider other options, including training their cat and using Soft Paws. The last time I performed a declaw surgery was in 2008, and I intend to never perform the surgery again. I'm so thankful to own my own practice and finally be able to make my own decisions about what is best for my patients. We, at the Cat Care Clinic, are thrilled to join the mounting number of veterinary clinics that have put the health and well-being of cats before furniture and carpet. We believe declawing is to the detriment of all cats and can be managed with simple educational tools. We believe that declawing cats is not necessary and will cause behavior and health problems in most cats. Alternatives are available and DO work. The procedure IS painful but the most serious side effects won't be noticed until well after the surgical procedure and healing process is complete. Our goal is to provide high quality medicine in a compassionate, cat-friendly environment. We pay attention to the smallest details to enhance your cat's safety and comfort. You and your cat will have a quiet and comfortable experience from the moment you walk in. No barking dogs means a less stressful environment for your cat. Our exam tables and kennels are non-stainless steel to reduce noise and increase patient comfort. We use non-skid mats and towels for our elderly patients and others with mobility issues that may cause them to slip on the table.

We believe in considering the needs of the client and the cat when developing a care plan. We offer therapeutic laser treatments for conditions such as arthritis, chronic pain, wound healing, and many other conditions. Alternative medicine options such as acupuncture and supplements are available. We perform in-house bloodwork, urinalysis, and ultrasound, and all ultrasounds are sent to a board certified specialist for interpretation.

We follow American Association of Feline Practitioners guidelines for vaccinations and deworming, and use only Merial PureVax vaccines, which greatly reduce the risk of vaccine reactions and injection site cancers.

Dr. Edwards is an Oklahoma native and graduate of Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She spent her first six years of practice in Colorado and Florida, and brought three feral cats from Florida to live with her in Oklahoma. She has special interests in geriatric medicine and pain management.

We have never declawed felines at All About Cats. We try to educate clients on ways to help decrease destructive behaviour and many things do help, but bottom line some cats scratch the wrong things no matter what you do, but we love them even if we do have some distressed details in our furnishings! They are family. We put up with way more from other family members..right? All About Cats Veterinary Clinic North Vancouver B.C, Canada

As of April 20, 2015, no further declaw surgeries are being done at Blue Cross Animal Hospital Toronto. As times change, and as we learn more about pet health and behaviour, it is clearly important that we adjust our practices to always provide the best possible care for your pets. Over the years, Blue Cross Animal Hospital has stopped cropping dog ears, or docking puppy tails, believing these to be unnecessary and painful procedures. In keeping with current research, we have adjusted our vaccination protocols to avoid unnecessary vaccines and made changes to our spay and neuter age recommendations for several breeds. And now it's time to stop de-clawing cats. You can read more about our decision, as well as tips to keep your cat's claws from being a problem on our blog. Our hospital has not performed declawing since 2010.
