This site is a list of veterinarians in the U.S. and Canada who refuse to declaw, or declaw only under extreme conditions after strongly recommending against it, and actively working with cat owners to implement humane alternatives. Veterinarians listed on this site, who do declaw in these extreme cases, passionately oppose the procedure and will only perform it if they feel that the cat owner is bound and determined to declaw or euthanize the cat. The list does not include veterinarians who declaw under less severe circumstances, or offer limited resistance to declawing.
An exception is made for declawing surgeries that are done strictly to improve the health of the cat; for example, preventing persistent infections by removing a deformed claw.
These veterinarians are leading the way to a more enlightened and compassionate way of dealing with cats' claws. A no-declaw policy is an excellent indicator that a veterinarian is caring and respectful of all creatures great and small. Please let these heroes know that you appreciate their stance on declawing.
