Veterinarians Who Don't Declaw
May 14, 2008

This site is a list of veterinarians in the U.S. and Canada who refuse to declaw or who declaw only under extreme duress, after strongly discouraging it and actively working with cat owners on humane alternatives. Veterinarians in the latter category unambiguously oppose the procedure and will only perform it if they feel that the cat owner is bound and determined to declaw or euthanize the cat. The list does not include veterinarians who declaw under less severe circumstances or who offer token resistance to declawing.

An exception is made for declawing surgeries that are done strictly to improve the health of the cat; for example, preventing persistent infections by removing a deformed claw.

These veterinarians are leading the way to a more enlightened and compassionate way of dealing with cats' claws. A no-declaw policy is an excellent indicator that a veterinarian is caring and respectful of all creatures great and small. Please let these heroes know that you appreciate their stance on declawing.

Do you know a "pro-claw" veterinarian that you'd like to add to the list? Please e-mail me with the following information:

  • Name of veterinary clinic or animal hospital
  • Name of veterinarian (may be omitted if entire clinic is no-declaw)
  • City and state
  • Phone number -- if at all possible
  • Web site URL -- if available
